The DIAC (Department of Immigration and Citizenship) which is now renamed as DIBP (Department of Immigration and Border Protection) announced the Australia SOL (Skilled Occupations List) in May of 2010 and this list has been effective since 1st July of 2010. Under the GSM (General Skilled Migration) program, this SOL applies to all the applications.
The SOL is based on the Australian and ANZSCO (New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations) and lists the high-value skills needed by Australia. To adapt to changes in Australia's labor market needs, the list will keep updating annually.
On 1st July 2013, the following 5 occupations were removed from the Australia SOL:
The Skilled Migration Program of Australia is managed through SkillSelect.
SkillSelect ensures that the Australia skilled migration program is based on the country’s economic needs and it will support the Government of Australia in managing who, when and in what numbers can apply for Australia migration.
Regional Skill Shortages are also addressed through SkillSelect. It allows intended migrants to decide if they wish to stay and work in a specific region of Australia. This will particularly benefit employers who are experiencing regional skill shortages and territory and state governments who are attempting to settle migrants in regional areas of the country.
