Australia To Mark Earth Hour On Saturday

AUSTRALIA will plunge into darkness on Saturday night when thousands of households and businesses switch off their lights for Earth Hour.

In addition to the traditional "lights out", some of Australia's icons - including the Sydney Opera House, the Arts Centre Melbourne and Council House in Perth - will be symbolising their commitment to renewable energy by glowing deep green on the night.

Community events are also being planned from street festivals in Sydney's Newtown to large concerts in Perth and bushwalks in Canberra.

Australia will join 150 countries to celebrate Earth Hour with nations including Libya and Swaziland joining the campaign in 2013.

The Australian event will begin at 8.30pm (AEDT).
