Out of the 91 countries studied in the Global Age Watch Index, Austria is placed 11 with the top spot taken by Sweden followed by Norway and Germany.
Social networking, income security, public transport and freedom are the things Austria was rated good for.
This is a unique, first-of-its-kind study in the world that takes different factors that lead to happy ageing into consideration. A help organization that works in collaboration with the UN, Helpage Internationale carried out the research.
The areas rated for the survey are health, income security, society, work and education, and the support received by the older generation. Social networking was rated particularly high in Austria.
91% of people in Austria aged above 50 said that they had friends or family who will help them in need. The same percentage of people also said that they were happy with their country’s freedom.
The statistics also show that 88.2% said they were happy with the income security, 83% were happy with the public transport, 77% felt safe being alone at night, and 72.7% were happy with the health.
Also, 42.4% of people aged 55-64 have a job and 62.3% of people over 60 have a higher education or school leaver's certificate. In 2012, 23.6% of Austrians were over 60 and by the year 2050, this will rise to 36.5%.
The number of people over or in their 80's will increase from 4.9% in 2012 to 12.2% by 2050.
