Austrian Tradition Imster Schemenlaufen Given UNESCO Heritage Status

Imster Schemenlaufen of Austria which is performed during the carnival period has been recognised by UNESCO as one of world's cultural heritage.

The tradition takes place every 4 years in Tyrol. It is usually performed on Sunday and starts from morning hours till 1800 hours exactly.

During festival season before Lent, Carnival in Austria is celebrated; main celebrations are in February. There is a public celebration and a parade with circus, masked peoples and street parties.

Local communities are turned into masked characters during Schemenlaufen in Imst.
