Canada Adds 81,000 New Jobs - A Significant Employment Growth In August

Statistics Canada published its monthly Labour Force Survey for August 2019, revealing that 81,000 new jobs were generated in Canada last month. This job increase is the second-highest monthly gain in this year, with the Ontario province seeing the most significant increase.

Most Significant Monthly Job Increase since April

After three continuous months of small change in employment, the job increase in August 2019 surpassed all predictions. August 2019 noticed the 7th biggest gain in jobs attached since Statistics Canada began reporting its data in 1976. The August 2019 had the 2nd most significant job growth in the year 2019 following the 106,500 new jobs added in April 2019.

The recent employment increase has now made the net number of jobs across the past 12 months to 471,300, the biggest total observed since 2003.

Five Canadian Provinces Observed Growth in Employment

Related to past months, the significant employment gains were in Quebec and Ontario, Ontario province saw the most significant change with employment growth of 58,000 jobs in August 2019, with the majority of these openings being in retail trade or wholesale. Quebec’s employment increased by 20,000 in the industries of real estate, finance, rental, and leasing.

Education, Finance, and IT Lead as Top Industries

The tech sector remains to be one of the quickest growing industries in Canada. August 2019 observed growth of 17,000 jobs in the technology industry, the majority being in the province of British Columbia. Across the prior twelve months, the net employment growth in the scientific, professional, and technical services was 109,000, or 7.4 percent, the quickest growth rate among all principal industrial sectors. 

There was an increase of 22,000 new jobs generated in the insurance, finance, rental, real estate, and leasing industries, particularly in Ontario province and Quebec province. Educational services employment also noticed a surge in August 2019, leading the total to 35,000.
