Canada government is providing support to Toronto civic participation program to provide learning opportunities for participants from ethnic communities to increase their knowledge and understanding of Canada and help raise civic participation. This was announced at Toronto on 27 July 2010 by Colin Carrie, Member of Parliament for Oshawa on behalf of Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney.
MP Carrie stated that,” Canada’s future depends on all of us growing together through our shared values, history and institutions.”” Through initiatives such as the Civic Awareness Project, we are acting to ensure that this future will be built by all Canadians, including newcomers, as we continue strengthening our proud and democratic society.”
This project is aiming at engaging 240 participants, particularly from Chinese, Afghani and Somali Communities. The learning activities would include Canadian democratic process, the structure of government and the rights and responsibilities associated with Canadian citizenship. They will also be imparted leadership training and are expected to share their new skills and knowledge with others.
Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s Multiculturalism Grants and Contributions Program support projects that promote intercultural understanding and equal opportunity for people of all cultures and faiths.
