Françoise-Philipe Champagne reportedly informed the Economic times that highly skilled workers from India will be actively encouraged to seek employment in Canada. The move comes as Canada positions itself to become recognized as a leader in technology and innovation.
Champagne went on to state that employing skilled workers from India would have mutual benefit to both countries. The statement follows an announcement from the US, to impose restrictions on skilled workers coming from India.
Canada is already a popular place for skilled workers from India, with over 35,000 permanent residences being granted to Indians in the last two years. In addition to skilled workers, Indian students also look to study in the country, with approximately 3.8% of Canada’s population being of Indian origin.
Champagne suggested that the countries are looking to become close allies in business, which will have a positive effect on growth and trade. In the periods between 2015-2016, trade was valued at $6.2 billion dollars and this is predicted to continue to grow. The bilateral trade between the US and Canada currently sits at a daily rate of $2.4 billion dollars. Champagne said that trade between India and Canada should have ambitions to equal or surpass that figure.
