Canada To Attract Skilled Newcomers To Meet Labor Market Needs

19 Mar 2014

Immigration News

Immigration ministers of Federal, provincial and territorial (FTP) levels restated their dedication to recruit economic immigrants who have the eligible skills that the Canadian economy needs.

Chris Alexander, Citizenship and Immigration Minister of Canada and Thomas Lukaszuk Alberta’s Jobs, Skills, Training and Labor minister chaired jointly with others at the Federal, provincial, and territorial meeting. For all the ministers who attended, economic immigration was the first priority.

The ministers agreed upon the consensus to have cooperation on building a new model of recruitment that is known as Expression of Interest system. This new recruitment model is expected to transform the immigration system of Canada into one which will be more supportive of the needs of the labor market.

The Expression of Interest system will provide Canadian employers and governments access to foreign skilled workers and accelerate their entry into the country for jobs which are not filled by the existing people in Canada. Before the newer system is launched in January 2015, the ministers agreed to engage mutually and intensively with employers on the Expression of Interest system.

Immigration ministers also authorized a plan to better settlement results for newcomers across the country. This plan and scheme contains foreign qualification recognition, enhanced pre-arrival services, language skills learning for beginners who are not in the workforce and practical ways to encourage recently arrived people to make them associated with their respective communities.

The ministers also assessed the progress till date on the Federal, provincial and territorial vision action plan, restated the continuing need to meet the immigration levels with country’s economic needs. They also assessed and discussed the need to build a fast and flexible economic immigration system which mostly focuses on meeting demands of labor market requirements across the country, progress on economic settlement and incorporating good results for new arrivals to Canada.

Even as immigration holds the key to Canada’s future trade and industry, the ministers decided to meet yet again before year end to carry on with this significant work.
