A meeting of territorial, provincial and federal tourism ministers took place in Whitehorse from 11th to 13th September, 2013. The meeting was addressed to discuss the impact of international growth markets on Canada’s tourism sector and share their views on strategies to capitalize on global tourism opportunities.
David Ramsay, Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment said that they can learn a lot from their counterparts in Canada on the best possible ways to keep the NWT (Northwest Territories) competitive in a global tourism market. He said they discussed everything from visa requirements, better air access to the NWT, cost of air travel to and within the country, developing tourism products and making the most of marketing dollars.
A presentation on Aboriginal Tourism was given by Minister Ramsay stating that one of their main goals is growing the Aboriginal Tourism sector in the NWT, and so these discussions on growing the tourism industry were especially important to him.
Over the course of the conference, representatives from NWT Tourism and Minister Ramsay met the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of the CTC (Canadian Tourism Commission) to discuss the best possible ways to access more marketing support to advertise the NWT in 2 international target markets for the territory – Japan and China.
The GNWT is undertaking steps to diversify and strengthen the economy – a main priority of the 17th Legislative Assembly - by analyzing options to draw more tourists to the NWT and the best possible ways to provide support for local tourism operators.
