Canadian job market is flush with permanent and summer jobs, paid internships
Students are ramping up efforts to get into the Canadian job market this summer.
The Canadian job market took in 54,000 more youths in May compared to April this year, according to the Canadian Labour Force Survey.
The growth in youth employment is in line with a survey by the BMO Bank of Montreal which states that 51 per cent of employers are looking to hire recent graduates or students this year.
“We’ve seen more companies investing in employee training and development, which will help business owners ensure they have a supply of talented employees who are prepared to drive performance,” said Steve Murphy, senior vice president of commercial banking for BMO Bank of Montreal.
“The most recent employment numbers are indicative of the optimism that business owners are feeling.”
According to the survey, 30 per cent of employers are planning to employ at least one student this summer, while 21 per cent said they are willing to offer permanent jobs to recent graduates.
Ontario leads the country in having the most job vacancies for students and graduates at 56 per cent, followed by the Atlantic Provinces (53 per cent) and Quebec (52 per cent).
Permanent employment prospects in the Canadian job market are highest in the manufacturing industry (25 per cent), followed by the services sector (24 per cent) and retail and business/financial industries (23 per cent).
Recent graduates looking to work as paid interns will have high hopes in the business/financial sector (37 per cent), followed by the retail (25 per cent) and construction industries (22 per cent).
Meanwhile, students who would like to get summer jobs may find opportunities in service and manufacturing companies (35 per cent) as well as the agricultural sector (34 per cent).
