Canadian Open Work Permit Pilot Allows Spouses To Work In Canada

Common-law partners and Spouses of Canadians who are applying for Canada PR have the opportunity to live in Canada lawfully with a Canadian open work permit.

The Canadian Open Work Permit Pilot permits common-law partners and spouses of Canadians to work in Canada as they are appealing for Canada PR by spousal sponsorship. To be qualified, they must previously be residing in Canada on lawful status at the corresponding address as their partner, among other requirements. They don't need to have an employment offer already.

Refugees, Immigration, and Citizenship Canada (I.R.C.C) prolonged the pilot for the 4th time in the last January until 31 July 2020. So far there has been no information on whether or not this pilot will be continued this year.

The fundamental difference with open work permits is they permit international citizens to work for any company in Canada. Few work permits are employer-specific, where the international Citizen may only work for the organization mentioned on their permit for their tenure in Canada.

I.R.C.C has prolonged the pilot each year since it was originally executed in 2014. The program permits common-law partners and spouses to work while they are waiting to obtain Canada PR.

How to Receive an Open Work Permit as the Spouse of a Canadian

You can appeal for the Open Work Permit Pilot and internal Common-law/Spousal Sponsorship at the corresponding time, or individually.

If you are appealing at the corresponding time, send everything by mail comprising all documents and payment proof. If this is not feasible due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I.R.C.C asks that you demonstrate why and they may retain your application for tenure of 90 days. If the application is yet unfinished in 60 days, I.R.C.C will demand the missing documents with a supplementary 90-day deadline.

If you have previously applied for a sponsorship and obtained permission in principle on your Canada PR application, you can appeal for the open work permit through online mode.

The permission in principle is a letter from I.R.C.C stating that the Canada PR eligibility conditions have been met, but security, medical, and background tests still require to take place.
