The number of immigrant nationals in Canada with a Post-Graduation Work Permit has increased remarkably in the latest years, soaring from nearly 5,400 in the year 2005 to greater than 143,000 in the last year.
The latest Statistics Canada study recognized that the increasing number of global students arriving to Canada and also the enhancements to the successful Post-Graduation Work Permit (P.G.W.P.P) Program make this possible.
The P.G.W.P program grants an open work permit which enable global graduates who are graduated from post-secondary Universities in Canada to live and work in Canada for duration of a maximum of three years following their studies are finished.
The time length that a work permit is valid completely depends on the academic program length.
The Canadian Post-Graduation Work Permit enables global graduates to work in any profession any place in Canada, and switch companies at any time.
To be qualified, the applicant must have finished a study program of minimum 8 months long and also satisfy other detailed criteria.
Since the P.G.W.P.P’s launch in the beginning of 2000s, the number of foreign students studying in Canada has increased sharply, tripling across the last 10 years to just above 572,000 in 2018.
This program has undergone even more exciting growth. Statistics Canada’s report shows the number of work permits announced in the year 2016 had grown above 15 times from the year 2005, from the previous 7,400 to 117,700 as per the calculations of the Immigration department.
That growth has maintained, reaching higher than 143,000 Post-Graduation Work Permits granted in the year 2018.
One development was the expulsion in 2008 of the demand that applicants have a employment with an organization in a area related to their education.
Another improvement was the extended validity of the work permit from 1 year to a maximum of 3 years, thus enabling graduates to live in Canada and change to Canada PR status.
I.R.C.C also withdrew the condition that applicants need to have a valid study permit while they submitting their P.G.W.P.P application.
The work experience in Canada which is obtained by the P.G.W.P.P can also further improve the possibility of obtaining Canada PR by the federal Express Entry, which facilitates applications for Canadian PR for qualified skilled immigrant workers.
3 years of work experience in Canada is worth 64 points beneath Express Entry’s CRS. Express Entry applicants with a qualified post-secondary education in Canada can receive a supplementary 15 or 30 points to their C.R.S score, depends on their study program.
Taken together, foreign graduates can obtain a maximum of 94 CRS points toward their Express Entry system CRS score for their education in Canada and work experience in Canada.
Both the Canadian government and provinces in Canada have produced additional avenues for global students to transition to PR status by the Atlantic Immigration Pilot (AIPP) Program and the several PNP streams.
