Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada declared a standard processing time 20 calendar days for study permit applications which are submitted through Student Direct Stream electronically by authorized residents of India, China, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

In the May 2 update, Refugees, Immigration and Citizenship Canada (I.R.C.C) says that the decreased processing standard only implements if a study permit candidate provides a comprehensive electronic application, details of biometrics, and all the necessary documentation. I.R.C.C said that paper appeals will remain to process below Student Direct Stream (S.D.S) processing till May 15, 2019.
The Student Direct Stream is a quicker study permit processing program accessible to authorized residents living in India, China, Vietnam and Philippines who aspire to study in Canada at a Designated Learning post-secondary Canadian Institution and who satisfy particular requirements by giving upfront documentation. To become qualified for the Student Direct Stream, people need first to get an acceptance letter from a Canadian Designated Learning Institution.
Applicants should also present evidence of tuition payment for the initial year of study at a Designated Learning Institution in Canada and buying of a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (G.I.C) which worths CAD 10,000. Fulfillment of an upfront medical test, and securing a score of 6 or higher in International English Language Testing System (I.E.L.T.S) in specific language ability or a Test d’Évaluation de Français (T.E.F) score that is equal to a Language Benchmark of Canada 7 for French.
The initiation of the S.D.S is part of a broader initiative by the government of Canada to develop the study permit applications processing and bringing more global students to Canada as a study goal.
