Hong Kong people have been reassured that the capitalist system that they are familiar with will not be disturbed. The reassurance by Hao Tiechuan, director of publicity, culture and sports affairs in the liaison office the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong special Administrative Region, has become necessary in the wake of recent misunderstanding over a new law to keep the identities of company directors secret if they belong to Mainland China and hold the positions in the island state. The long designation of the official is indicative of the long-winded approach of the People’s Republic as against SAR that wants transparency in all dealings.
Is the reconciliation approach now being adopted by the Mainland is temporary or permanent? While it remains to be seen, to start with, supreme leader Deng Hsiao ping’s “One China, two systems” policy is holding. The bludgeon approach as in Tiananmen Square is not there, to which the SAR people must be happy. At the back of mind, however, the dragon is exhaling hot fumes down. As a result, the people of Hong Kong have become too sensitive even over small issues such as Chinese traders from Mainland emptying their stores of nutritious baby milk formula. The Hong Kongers may have to cry like the baby to hold on to their brand of capitalism.
