The recent global student enrollment data, published last week by the Education Department, was notable for its extensive surge in Indian students, whose registrations increased by 29,000 which equals to 39% in the year to June 2019.
There are problems on the horizon, however, with the present Australian Government 30,000 cut to its permanent migrant intake likely to reduce Indian student numbers moving forward:
Indians are the most significant migrants' source to Australia since the 2016-17. Above 20.5% of the entire permanent migration program which is 33,310 positions of 162,417 positions came from India.
India is also the 2nd biggest source of foreign students for Australia, with higher than 70,000 global students registering at Australian educational institutes in the year 2018.
The latest tweaks to the policy of migration mean last two years have been hard on foreign students and skilled migrants striving for an Australia PR visa, migration experts say.
Approximately three years ago, foreign students pursuing courses in occupations that are in tremendous demand like accounting and occupations related to Information Technology, would receive an invitation to apply for Australia PR on basis of 60 to 75 points.
In the span of two years, the entire picture has changed. Students are discouraged as they are not receiving an invitation to apply for Australia PR unless if you are securing 80 points. It becomes extremely competitive.
The current decrease in the permanent migrant intake has notably reduced the probability of foreign students gaining Australian permanent residency, thus decreasing the incentive for foreign students to study in Australia.
Indians, in specific, are renowned for practicing Australian education system to obtain backdoor of Australian permanent residency.
Certainly, the Home Affairs Department recent student visa data reveals significant growth in Australia temporary graduate (485) visas.
