Changes To Australia Temporary Work (Skilled) Visa (subclass 457)

Beside the regulations to crack down on abuse of visa for temporary workers, DIAC also  increased the visa fee for Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457) from $85 to $330. However Immigration Department has not make any changes to the fee to be paid by the sponsor. The visa fee for sponsor remains unchanged at $420.

Temporary Work (Skilled) (subclass 457) visa program allows employers to fill short to medium term skill shortages by recruiting qualified workers from outside of Australia if they are unable to find the same skilled professionals in the country.

The changes to the program are:

1. Employers have to genuinely look for Australians before hiring for the same position from outside of Australia
2. Skills assessments has to be done
3. Salary and other benefits provided to the foreign temporary worker should be at par with their Australian counterparts
4. Employees have to be employed by their sponsor in a direct 'employee-employer' relationship
5. English language requirements have to be met

DIAC has streamlined the 457 subclass visa & the improvements to the scheme would ensure that the intent and integrity of the program is respected by the foreign workers as well as the sponsors.
