From October 24th, 2017, children under the age of 22 are being considered as dependents for all Immigration Programs managed by Canada. These include economic migrants and refugees also. In the past, only children below 19 years were considered dependents.
Children of 22 years age or above, who owing to a physical or mental health condition, rely on their parents will be considered dependent children.
The change in age limit is not applicable retroactively to any application submitted after August 1st, 2014, or before October 24th, 2017. IRCC has said that the process to apply the change to existing applications would require a delay in finalization of several PR applications and affect processing times for the running programs.
The Canadian government feels that a high age limit will impact positively on society and culture and keep families together. It will also enhance the economy of Canada by making it a top destination for skilled immigrants who are greatly interested in keeping their families as one.
Minister of Immigration, Ahmed Hussen, said that “Increasing the age of dependents plays a big role in helping all the families to live together. This will result in economic and social gains, and enhance the attraction of the country, as a preferred destination for immigrants and refugees”.
The change is additional proof of the progressive outlook practiced by the present federal government on issues related to immigration. Other measures were changes incorporated in the Citizenship Act, permitting immigrants to move to citizenship easily than in the past and in a speedy manner.
