Civil Service Proposed For Foreigners In Switzerland

Foreigners who have been living in Switzerland for some time should be called up for compulsory civil service in order to foster better integration, according to economic think tank Avenir Suisse.

The business-backed group, which claims that foreigners have an advantage in the Swiss labour market because they do not have to do civil service, also wants to create a conscription army that puts women on an equal footing with men.

The proposals form part of report "Ideas for Switzerland", due to be presented by Avenir Suisse at a press conference in Zurich next Wednesday.
