The Governor of Indiana, Mike Pence, presented a conservative track record of his immigration that dated back to his early days in the US House. He also resonated the strong position of Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, who has Pence as his running companion.
During the 12 years in the House, Pence’s support was invaluable for many bills which were aiming at the overhaul of the immigration system. This includes a limit on the number of visas being issued to each country. The limit will allow individual states to position border-patrol militias and define English as the country’s official language.
Pence’s joint efforts for the immigration bill that swept 2005, was among the first to propose a 700 mile border along Mexico and a penalty of $3,000 for immigrants who were living illegally in the country. There was a proposal of punishing the illegal immigrants in the country which was approved by the House but not the Senate.
The 2005 version of the bill that he supported, called for ‘automatic citizenship’ for children whose parents were married, so long as one of the parents was a citizen or legal resident. If the parents were not married, the child's mother had to be a citizen or a legal resident.
Pence signaled support for a change in immigration law which could redefine the system in which the children born in the United States would automatically become citizens.
