Count Of Indian Students Heading Towards Australia Increases

07 Apr 2015

Immigration News

As per a release by the Trade Commission of Australia regarding the latest update on the International Student Data, the number of students from India has gone up. In 2012 and 2013, it was 11,239 and 10,168 respectively whereas it shot up to 13,730 in 2014, making Indians the third highest group among foreign students to enroll themselves in New South Wales. Ten years ago, the same group was the fourth biggest.

There was a rise of nearly 3,562 Indian students within just a year’s time. The statistics also revealed that in the year 2014, 52 percent of students from India, amounting to 7,200, took admission in commerce and management courses. In the year 2010, the percentage of Indian origin students was at a decreased level of 48 percent for the same courses. There has been a rise in the number of students coming from India, who chose to study in Australia’s higher education area.

The count of Indian students registered for VET or Vocational Education and Training were at 70 percent while only 27 percent enrolled for higher education during 2010. The numbers were reversed in 2014; with 33 percent coming to Australia for pursuing VET and 51 percent for higher studies. International students contributed to the Australian economy in a major way. In the year 2014, the total boost to the economy was 16.6 billion dollars wherein it was 5.8 billion dollars just for New South Wales.

According to Sydney’s CEO of Business Events, Lyn Lewis-Smith, the Indian education system was very strong. Despite the brightest minds arriving in Australia for pursuing higher studies, Australia is yet to reach its mark of alluring Indian students. Their target age group was between 25 to 35 years. On return to their homeland, the Indian students would become ambassadors for Australia and would always come back to re-establish the social ties and bolster tourism as well.

Smith added that New South Wales comprises of 11 well-established universities and that they were aware that only the best Indian candidates were coming here for higher studies. In a bid to help these students grab lucrative job opportunities in Australia as soon as their studies are completed, they were revamping their syllabus. India remains a priority for Australia and especially New South Wales.
