Bringing together suppliers, government official and retailers, Wal-mart Stores Inc. spearheaded an effort so they can figure out how to bring more manufacturing jobs to the U.S.
This is the 1st 2-day U.S. Manufacturing Summit by Walmart - World’s largest retailer. It is hosted in Orlando, wishing to capitalize on Walmart’s recent commitment to drive increased manufacturing in the United States.
This ‘made in the USA’ campaign can boost Walmart’s image as it was constantly under attack by labor-backed groups that have criticized it as a destroyer of U.S. jobs rather than a creator.
The aim of the summit was to start ‘connecting the dots’ with a dialogue among eight governors, officials from three dozen states, the 500 manufacturers. Penny Pritzker, U.S. Commerce Secretary and Bill Simon, president and CEO of the Walmart’s U.S. division were present at the summit.
Simon said that it could be difficult for one at a time for all the people involved, and the best way to overcome the challenges is talking to one another. The summit comes 7 months after the Ark.-based discounter, Bentonville, pledged that it prepared to buy $50 billion more goods over the next decade that are made in U.S.
That’s the equivalent of just more than 10% of Walmart’s retail sale this year. This movement could help increase the flow of jobs to the United States.
