CRS Under Express Entry System To Undergo Changes From 6th June

03 Apr 2017

Canada Express Entry

The Canadian government recently announced new changes to the Express Entry system. These changes will come into force from 6th June 2017 onwards. Under the changes announced the candidates that can demonstrate a strong command over the French language will gain additional CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) points although it has yet to be announced how many points will be available to French speakers. From June 6th onwards additional points will be given to French-speaking candidates who also prove their skills in English

15 additional points will be given to the applicants who prove adequate intermediate (equivalent to CLB 7) or better in French ability and CLB 4 or lower in English ability.

An aggregate of 30 extra points will be awarded given to the candidates who speak French and score CLB 5 or more for their English ability.
Candidates willing to claim points for French ability have to take the Test d’Évaluation de Français (TEF).

Another major change that is being considered is - to award extra points to those who have a sibling residing in Canada on permanent residency or citizenship. The applicant for PR will be awarded 15 additional CRS points. An applicant can claim these points even when their spouse or common-law partner has a sibling in Canada on PR or Citizenship.

Lastly from 6th June onwards, it won’t be a mandate to register with Canada’s government job bank.

Attorney David Cohen said that “these are slight changes, and nothing more. An additional 15 or 30 points is unlikely to shake up the pool in any major way, and those candidates who do benefit because of their French ability or by having a sibling in Canada — or both, for that matter — are unlikely to shoot up to the top of the ranking system as a result.

“I am glad to see that registration in the Job Bank will become voluntary. This move empowers candidates and employers alike, rather than forcing them to use one specific job matching facility among many.”
