The rules and regulations that restrict the number of foreign workers in a firm in the city state have come in for a challenge from the tourism and hospitality industry. Hoteliers in particular say the limited number is cutting down the room for growth. They want the curbs to be removed so they can flourish when the conditions are conducive such as at present when Singapore is becoming a hub for global meets.
The employers here are incensed by the fact that they will have to pay higher levies if they have to have foreign workers. This has stymied the entry of foreign workers who are to pay usurious amounts to agents to find a job in Singapore in the first place. This plus the levy on employers is further factor that is proving a bottleneck.
The entry of foreign workers has come into prominence with the chief executive of a leading hotel voicing his concern over the levy that is putting paid to chances of growth of the hospitality industry.
