The Ministry of Immigration and Integration, in Denmark, has decided to introduce rules which provide flexibility to skilled foreign professionals for taking up extra work out of the purview of their primary employment. They will be authorized to do a second job in the same professional spheres and working visas under new rules will be issued.
This matter attracted headlines from the Danish media recently after there were reports that foreign academics were prosecuted for taking up teaching assignments outside their primary institutions where they were employed.
There was a norm to submit an application to get a work permit for each employment. This was an obsolete and rigid way of doing things. With this development, the government now proposes to modernize the rules.
The new rules have the provision to permit foreign academics to work for 12 hours in a week or 156 hours in a quarter, in a secondary job.
Inger Støjberg Minister of Immigration had presented the proposal to the Parliament.
The requests and suggestions of various stakeholders will be entertained and a second proposal will be presented to parliament in February. Following this, it will be passed.
The Danish People's Party which is against immigration has some misgivings regarding the proposal. The immigration spokesperson of DF Martin Henriksen stated that the People should obey the rules, when they arrive in Denmark, and receive a work permit with certain conditions. They must be complied with he added.
The High Court has spoken that the guidelines of Agency for International Recruitment and Integration - SIRI over the extra work permit issue were very confusing. In one instance, they had acquitted Jimmy Martinez-Correa a Colombian professor had been charged with breaking the terms of Working Visa.
