Denmark has been placed third in the EU’s annual innovation ranking. This third place underlines the toughness of international competition and the need for an even stronger Danish innovation system.
Denmark has maintained its point score in the European Commission’s annual innovation ranking, the Innovation Union Scoreboard. However, in 2013 Germany increased its number of points and is therefore now ahead of Denmark. Sweden still occupies the lead.
The Minister for Higher Education, Morten Østergaard, emphasizes that the ranking demonstrates the strength of the Danish innovation system, but also the need for improvement.
“I am very pleased with Denmark’s ranking on the European Commission’s annual Innovation Union Scoreboard. Despite the economic crises, Denmark has still achieved some of the highest numbers of points. However, we need to acknowledge that it is not enough to maintain our ranking. It is important we continue our ambitious innovation strategy,” says Morten Østergaard.
Need to strengthen the innovation system
Denmark is in the breakaway area of ??the EU's four innovation leaders. A global ranking 14 most innovative countries is that they overall have increased their innovation points since last year.
The government's innovation strategy, which was presented in December 2012 offers a number of initiatives to strengthen cooperation and framework for business innovation.
Specifically, it is among other government targets in 2020 to be among the top five in the OECD when it comes to the share of innovative enterprises, highly educated in the private sector and private investment in research and development as a share of GDP.
The annual Innovation Union Scoreboard compiled by the European Commission as part of the EU countries Lisbon strategy to strengthen Europe's competitiveness in the knowledge society.
