Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) are continuing to visit communities in outside capital cities of Australia to provide people direct advice on their visa issues.
Later this month, officers will visit South Australia’s Renmark as part of an ongoing outreach program so that individuals can speak to an immigration officer directly about particular issues they may be facing.
A spokesman from DIBP said that the department is committed to ensure the integrity of Australian visa and migration programs and people need to have a valid visa to stay in Australia. He added that this is an opportunity for people to have their visa status clarified and work on it before they are identified in a compliance operation.
Michaelia Cash, assistant Minister for Immigration and Border Protection confirmed that recently, a compliance sweep of western Sydney’s farms has located 8 illegal workers.
A number of people who are overstaying their visas and working illegally were located in Victoria and New South Wales in just a few of weeks. In the latest operation, 8 Thai, Chinese and South Korean nationals were detained along with another 15 in New South Wales and 7 in Victoria.
Senator Cash said employers need to be aware that recklessly or knowingly referring an illegal worker for work or allowing a person to work illegally is a criminal offence.
Employers can check the details of prospective employees, with their consent, to quickly confirm their eligibility to work in Australia, VEVO (Visa Entitlement Verification Online) service is the best source.
