Domestic IT Companies Cheer As Outsourcing Fee On H-1B US Visas Lapses

An Outsourcing fee has been imposed on US visas for the Indian technology professional that are highly qualified has lapsed, which has provided the companies, minimum temporary relief from the payment, which Nasscom, Industry body, considers it to be discriminatory.

In 2010, August, the $2000 fee for the H-1B visas and $2250 fee for few L-1 visas were adopted by the US. They were applicable for companies having 50 or more employees, with more than half of them in the nation.

Even though the fee has not been renewed by the US Congress; it can come up for review later. This is considered to be a welcome step and would urge the USCIS not to reintroduce this fee.  The Nasscom said in an email to media, as on date, September 30th cannot be considered as an end date and it could possible reappear as pay for option in the fall when the budget issues as well as funding issued are raised.

Indian IT outsourcing industry that is worth $146 billion has been the beneficiary of the work visas temporary that require skilled foreigners to work in the US. The India-based IT companies invested more $2 billion in 2011-2013, and have paid $22.5 billion in the form of taxes to the US Treasury in those years and today it has supported more than 411,000 direct as well as indirect jobs that include 300,000 held by the Citizens of US and permanent residents, Nasscom said in the study last month.

The US Congress has been considering the bills that seek to triple cap of H-1b visas to 195,000. However, there has been growing disconnect about the H-1B visa process among the skilled workers in the US, which intensified after the reports of workers being laid off from the Disney and replaced by H-1B visa holders.
