The island state’s emphasis on education is paying off. Coupled with safe and salubrious climate, Singapore is earning a name for itself as the place for higher education from the dons of highly developed countries.
Prof Martyn Partridge, Senior Vice-Dean of Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine affiliated to Nanyang Technological University, says helping to start a medical school is the biggest challenge he has faced. The school has been set up in collaboration with Imperial College, London.
Prof Martyn says Singapore is a wonderful place to work, where colleagues are excited, interested and well trained. In this environment, there is strong emphasis on education and science. Styles maybe different, but the institution shares the same values as in the West.
Referring to Singapore’s transformation, the don says: “I have been visiting Singapore for more than 20 years and I’ve witnessed its transformation in that time. There’s a world of difference between visiting a county and living here. But I can honestly say my affection for the country, its people and culture have grown. A warm climate is always attractive to anybody from Northern Europe – but the common British moan about the weather isn’t irrelevant -- `nice day’ seems superfluous when it’s always warm.
It is because of this transformation that rarest of the rare medical cases are being treated in Singapore hospitals.
