A recent report by CBC (Conference Board of Canada) has revealed that Canada immigration rules should be amended to enable more skilled immigrants into Canada. The report also emphasized that Canada’s immigration should concentrate on skills possessed immigrants to avoid facing any acute shortages of labor in the coming times. The recommendations of CBC’s analysts stress modernized immigration policies have to be introduced to help Canada economy grow and argues that outdates Canada immigration rules will stifle the growth of Canadian economy.
As of now, Canada is undoubtedly, a leading economy in the world. As per Ottawa based Conference board’s report, authored by Glen Hodgson, chief economist of the board global economic slowdown has come to a relief, however, the coming times are going to see shortage of required workforce in Canada. Now, the Canada labor market is affected due to baby-boomers reaching retirement age and poor birth rate is proving a bad factor for Canadian economy.
As per Hodgson, the potential for long term growth of the economy of any country depends on three factors. These include increased productivity, investments made in physical capital and the most important growth in the work force along with total number of hours worked for. He argues that Canada’s work force has been left behind in terms of improving productivity and capital investments. Hence, there seems to be an urgent need for making changes to current policies of Canada immigration, especially in temporary immigration. Other factors needing improvement includes protection of refugees and ease of Canada family visas for reunification of families.
On another occassion, Alberta’s employment and immigration minister Thomas Lukaszuk said that Canada’s temporary foreign worker program is no longer working and needs to be reassessed. He has called for a change to give the option of permanent Canadian visas for temporary workers. Mr Lukaszuk said the government could consider permanency for this workforce, like the Canadian Skilled Worker Visa, to avoid a constant shuffling of foreign workers in and out of the same positions.
