Female Partner Visa Applicants Get Domestic Pack, In Australia

12 Aug 2015

Immigration News

The Australian govt, has announced that women who are applying for the partner  visa are to offered new information packs in order to help combat domestic violence.

The packs are response to a growing concern that cultural differences, especially in nations such as India, China, Vietnam and Afghanistan, mean that overseas migrants might not realize that standards are different.

Michaelia Cash, Assistant immigration Minister, who also performs the role of Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Women, has said that the information is essential to educate women about “Australian standards” before they arrive in the nation.

She added, most often there is fundamental lack of knowledge of these women who are coming from overseas in terms of domestic laws, what rights they are afforded in Australia and where they need  to turn if they need help.

The packs, which do include emergency as well as support contacts, tell women that they do not have to stay in an abusive relationship to stay in Australia and point out that both men and women do have equal rights.

Cash explained, the pack does fulfill and election commitment and it includes information on Australia domestic laws which relate to family violence, sexual assault, forced marriage and emergency contacts in Australia,

She added, In any community, violence against women, should not be tolerated. We hope that this information pack will assist women from diverse communities who are often more vulnerable, when it comes to domestic violence and less potentially less able to seek appropriate assistance.

The parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Social Services, Concetta Fierravanti Wells,  who does have special responsibility for Multicultural Affairs and Settlement Services, Said that, a kitchen table, discussion project has enabled the women to talk about issues of domestic and family violence and sexual assault and a report has shown what can be done to help.

She added, the findings from this report reinforce concerns that I have been aware of during my many years of involvement in community activities. And most recent was my extensive engagement, with communities at risk. It has become crucial, that we now take concrete action to reduce as well as  ultimately eliminate violence by building resilience in families and empowering women.
