Food exporters should consider Sweden as a potentially lucrative new market for their goods, the Philippine Exporters’ Confederation (PhilExport) said in a statement over the weekend.
Citing a report from the Department of Foreign Affairs, Philexport said that the Scandinavian nation imports a lot of food products as its agricultural production is limited—and as Swedish tastes are changing and embracing new flavors.
“Swedish consumers have a taste for new food styles, which has increased the demand for ethnic good products from around the world,” the group said, adding that Swedes' increasing health-consciousness is also fueling a demand for organic foods and natural products. It identified potential products for export such as fruit and vegetables, rice, oils, raw coffee, tea, cocoa, and seafood.
In its statement, the group also noted that increasing maritime activity and investments in the Singapore basin as trade moves eastwards could benefit the Philippines. It noted that the integration of ASEAN economies into a single market in 2015 is expected to boost trade in the region, as well as strong economic growth, lower tariffs and increased trade between China and India.
