Association of Caregiver and Nanny Agencies Canada (ACNA) has revealed that foreign caregivers in Canada have gone down by 70 percent due to recent amendments introduced in Canada Foreign Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP).
From April 1 2010, the new Canada immigration rules for nannies and caregivers in Canada were introduced. The move by Immigration Canada has meant higher costs along with high risks for families in Canada needing helps of caregivers. Now, families requiring the services of nannies or caregivers for their children or elderly/disabled people will have to shell out higher costs including employee recruitment, travel expenses etc.
The higher costs of hiring nannies/caregivers in Canada have led to a decline of 70 to 90 percent in the placements for foreign caregivers.
The new rules do not ask for any obligation on the part of the caregivers to stay with the concerned families and also have the option of terminating their employment as and when they feel like doing so. Also, these rules are actually authorizing overseas caregivers to spend nothing coming to Canada and to stay with the families for whom they want to work.
The caregiver association in Canada has urged Canada immigration minister Jason Kenney to consider families using LCP not equivalent to the businesses using Temporary Foreign Worker Program of Canada as the aim of families is not to earn any profit but to raise healthy kids and care for the elderly.
