New Bill was submitted that stops Indian companies from hiring on H-1B and L-1 work visas. This was introduced by two US legislators. A second attempt to restrict the movement of temporary Indian Workers to US is taken by introducing this bill. This bill is called ‘H-1B and L-1 Visa reform Act of 2016’ which is stating that it will close all the loopholes in the given visa program. A move like this has already been seen before but this time it has taken a step ahead of increasing the features of it. The Act will allow companies to hire only 50 people and not more than 50% of their total employees on H-1B and L-1 visa.
But apart from the legislators who introduced the bill other people are mentioning several problems with the bill. US have a shortage of STEM skills which requires a short term move from the skilled workers from India. According to a report the introduction of H-1B visas was done to bridge this skills gap in the US. Survey shows that in past years, the US has invested billions of Dollars in the skill development and support for 4 lakh jobs.
The US will not support something that hinders their economy. The future of the bill passing and becoming a ‘law’ will only be decided when the Senate approves it and the American President signs it!
