Population Minister of Australia, Mr.Tony Burke stated that the idea of inviting new immigrants to Queensland appeared appropriate in controlling and balancing the flow of people in Australia. Anna Bligh, Premier of Queensland has a vision to make Townsville the second capital of Queensland. During April, when speaking about her vision, she said that its time to make Townsville a rival for Brisbane to help increase social, economic and cultural opportunities.
However, Julia Gillard, the Australian Prime Minister says that she does not favor ‘big Australia’.
Mr.Tony Burke said that it was unlikely to reach the population of 40 million in a short span of time. Immigration would contribute only a small percentage in the population increase of Australia.
Mayor of Townsville, Les Tyrell said that Queensland needs help from state and federal governments to become a main regional capital. He also mentioned that Townsville has all the required attributes to become a significant regional sector. Being in the middle of North Queensland, it happens to be a vital link between the workforces of the public sector and the mining sector of the State. He urged that there is an immediate need to upgrade the main infrastructure of the city and the problems that need utmost care are sewer system, public transport system of Townsville, housing, power supply and healthcare services by seeking help from the state and federal government.
