The government of India cleared a proposal for a social security agreement with Quebec – a Canadian province. About 40,000 people of Indian origin living in Quebec are going to be benefitted with this proposal.
P Chidambaram, Finance Minister of India told that the proposal was cleared by the Union Cabinet, and very soon India will be signing the agreement with Quebec.
He said that though India has a similar agreement with Canada, various provinces of that nation have the right to enter into an agreement like this with another country separately and Quebec has exercised that right.
Minister Chidambaram said that similar agreements have been forged with many countries such as Germany, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Korea and Switzerland by India.
Usually, Social security agreements prevent loss of benefits, enable portability of pension, eliminate double payment on social security contribution and exempt detached workers from the host country legislation.
Under these pacts, workers on short term contracts of up to 5-6 years need not make any social security contribution in their country of employment provided they continue to make social security payments in their country of origin.
