According to a new law which was introduced recently large number of educated Indians will be allowed in Singapore for the calibrated mix of nationalities to form a mixed race population in the country.
The look East policy was initiated during the regime of Mr. Narasimha Rao’s Government when Mr. Manmohan Singh the present Prime Minister of India was Finance Minister at that time. This policy is introduced now which will allow more and more Indians to Singapore.
Large number of Indians work in Singapore compared to Chinese who mostly come in as labours or employed in the service sector.
The new educated immigrants and the 9% of Singaporeans of Indian origin, mainly Tamil Speaking who settled here in the turn of the 19th century, is a sizeable community which contributes to the need to engage with India.
Singapore has “intersected” with India at key moments in its history.
Subhas Chandra Bose - Indian National Army was born in Singapore. India’s First Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru also visited the island 3 times – In the year 1936, 1945, 1950 – with return visits by Singapore’s legendry Lee Kwan-Yew and Goh Chok Tong.
Prior to the visit, India and Singapore signed two memoranda of understanding, one aimed at boosting cultural links, with a special medieval Indian Textile exhibition currently on show in the city, and a second between the respective ministers of training and public affairs.
