Indian Independence Day Celebrated With Pomp Fare In Australia

Indian Independence Day on 15^th August was celebrated with enthusiasm by the Indian community throughout Australia.

Sydney based Indian community leader organized an India-Australia Friendship Fair as a part of the celebrations.  Indian High Commissioner Biren Nanda along with New South Wales Premier Barry O' Farrell were a part of the celebration.

Tony Abbott, Opposition Leader also was present in the fair and praised for the role of Indians in Australia. He said that "India is a great country and Indian-born people are great citizens of Australia."

A two day music and dance festival was included in the Independence Day celebrations by the Indians in Melbourne. The music and dance festival was arranged by Federation of Indian Associations of Victoria (FIAV) and Australia India Institute.  Hundreds of Indians gathered in Melbourne to make the celebrations a success.

Traditional and modern Indian music along with dance performances were performed by numerous Indian artists in the 2 day festival. Odissi dancer Rajshree Behera’s solo performance was applauded by the audience. Also included were workshops and activities on Indian art and craft and a Bollywood dance.

FIAV President Vasan Srinivasan said that the festivals and celebrations were organized to create awareness among people about Indian culture and heritage.

Recently, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard had taken steps and also succeeded in positively reversing the policy on uranium sale to India. She is interest to take forward the Australia-India friendship further and will make her first official visit to New Delhi, India before the year-end.
