Farmers' Federation of Australia has been requesting for a stand-alone visa for the sector of agriculture. Despite originally signaling its enthusiasm, the Government has all but eliminated the proposal. However, the Australian Government is considering a plan to expand the work and holiday visa to cover 13 countries, including India, to improve the labor crunch in the agriculture sector.
Several farmers from India might require reskilling to work in Australian fields and also proficiency in the English language.
Australia will train workers for 3 weeks, and if they leave after only a month or a month-and-a-half, that's a significant strain on resources. But the addition of developing nations, such as Brazil and India, may resolve that problem to some extent because they are expected to be more convenient to the environment of farming work.
It is only a temporary resolution to the issue. The issue of labor supply for the agriculture sector will only be fixed with a specific visa for this sector.
David Coleman, Immigration Minister, denied proposals that would give easy access for low skilled migrants into Australia.
Work and holiday appellants must satisfy minimum conditions before a visa can be given, including having a reasonable English level, and they must hold or be studying for tertiary skills.
If the best personalities come here, say from nations like India, it's going to be advantageous for Australia as well as farmers, and the workers will get latest skills, and they will help the agriculture sector in India when they go back.
Under the plan, thirteen nations – India, Mexico, Brazil, the Philippines, Fiji, Switzerland, Croatia, Solomon Islands, Lithuania, Latvia, Andorra, Mongolia, and Monaco may be added to the existing list of 25 nations that are presently eligible for Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa.
