A new study by an American thinktank said that Indians in US are the 3rd largest immigrant group in the US right behind Mexicans and Chinese.
According to the report, nearly 1.9 million Indians live in US.
A study by Migration Policy Institute has found that in 1960, there were slightly more than 12,000 Indian immigrants in the US representing less than
0.5 per cent of the total immigrant population of 9.7 million. However, the Indians in US have now grown to over 150 times its size. With these many Indians already there, migrating to US and adjusting in there would be a breeze for anyone interested.
Till 2011, out of the 40.4 million immigrants in the US, Indian-born immigrants accounted for almost 5% (i.e., 1.86 million), with almost one-third of all Indian immigrants residing in just 2 states - New Jersey and California and more than a quarter of them living in 3 major metropolitan areas – San Jose, Chicago and New York.
The study also found that India was the 2nd most common country of origin for foreign students at US institutions in 2011, behind China. According to the Institute of International Education, out of the 764,495 foreign students at US institutes during the 2011-2012 academic year, students from India accounted for 13% (100,270) of them.
The study says that as a group, Indian Immigrants arrive on employment-based visas, are less likely to live below the federal poverty line, more likely to have strong English language skills and are better educated.
In 2011, Indian immigrant men outnumbered women. While 19% of employed Indian-born women worked in finance, business and management, more than 29% of employed Indian-born men worked in IT Occupations. Migrating to US is a very good option for skilled professionals.
The data for the study was collected from the US Census Bureau's 2011 ACS (American Community Survey), the 2000 Decennial Census (as well as earlier censuses), and the DHS’s (Department of Homeland Security) OIS (Office of Immigration Statistics) 2012 data.
