According to Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation’s new report, in terms of income and employment, Industrial PhD graduates have been scoring higher than those with conventional doctorates.
Titled ‘The Effect of the Industrial PhD Programme on Employment and Income’, the recent report uses comprehensive Danish government registers to compare industrial and other PhD candidates.
Initiated in 1971 and transformed in 1988 is the Danish Industrial PhD programme – which was among the first in Europe. 676 industrial PhDs graduated in Denmark in 2010: 1% in the humanities, 7% in agricultural, veterinary sciences and social sciences, 12% in the natural sciences, 19% in medical sciences and 54% of them in technical sciences.
High employment rates were found by the research among both conventional and industrial PhD graduates. From 2004-10, the employment rate for industrial PhDs varied between 95% and 99%.
The report says that very few graduates experience long-term unemployment.
The report also found that Industrial PhDs have high income levels. On average, in 2010, they earned €91,000 in gross income, and the reported income level was highest among social scientists earning around €112,000. Irrespective of their field of research, Industrial PhDs earn significantly more than conventional PhDs, on average €5,500 a year more.
