It is the first time for an Australian team from the Australia University that has entered the Solar Decathlon. The strong team that consisted of 51 team has built the Flame House - a retrofitted fibro cottage that is designed to appeal for older clients that are nearing to retirement. To place first in the engineering, solar and architecture categories, the Australians beat 20 other finalists.
The Project Manager Llyod Niccol said The competition is about producing a home that generates more energy than it consumes and is comfortable. He also said "We're trying to find some way to make an immediately and positive impact on our environment. The team used a range of technologies to modernize the cottage, Mr Niccol said. Before being shipped back to the University of Wollongong, the prize-winning pad is set to be pulled part and to be used for research and education.
