International workers in Canada may shortly have more freedom to switch employers based on the current government recommendation by Employment and Social Development Canada (E.S.D.C.) and Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (I.R.C.C.). The new plan would introduce modifications to the way work permits are announced to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (T.F.W.P.).
The suggested change was recently announced in the Canada Gazette, a government outlining publication for public policy initiatives.
If the recommendation is accepted, some immigrant workers beneath the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (T.F.W.P.) will be announced occupation special work permits, rather than the employer special work permits that are announced in the present system. It means that individual workers would no longer be tied to a particular employer, having the freedom to obtain a new job inside Canada, as long as it is in the relevant occupation and the employer is qualified to recruit foreign workers.
This is a famous Canadian immigration program allowing Canadian organizations to recruit international talent to fill jobs when Canadians are not available. The program greets near to 100,000 workers to Canada yearly.
One of the defining characteristics of the T.F.W.P. is the condition for Canadian organizations to get a Labour Market Impact Evaluation (L.M.I.A.) before selecting a foreign worker.
Below the latest government plan, those temporary immigrant workers in the more helpless streams of the program can apply for an occupation special work permit, preferably than an employer special work permit. It would allow workers to explore for new jobs in the same field.
The workers qualified for the occupation special work permit would be those appealing by the streams of Low-wage and Primary Agriculture of the T.F.W.P.
Prominently, only workers are capable of accepting positions with another Canadian firm who has a positive L.M.I.A. entitling them to hire international talent so that opportunities would be limited.
These recommended changes come after suggestions from workers’ rights groups and years of grievances about the abuse of temporary international workers in Canada. As well, Canadian house also launched a unique option of allowing international workers in vulnerable areas to appeal for Canadian open work permit. The occupation special work permit is a clear and streamlined choice that would complement this another new change.
