Jobs Await Migrant Workers In Hong Kong's Infrastructure Industry DOLE

Immigration News

Job opportunities will be open this year for migrant workers in Hong Kong's infrastructure industry, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said.

In a statement on March 15, Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said she received information from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) about “various job-generating infrastructure and tourism projects” expected to be undertaken by Hong Kong.

Migrant workers, including overseas Filipino workers, may get the opportunity to work as engineers, entertainers, performers and architects in Hong Kong, the DOLE said.

Based on data from the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration and the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO), around 174,851 Filipinos stayed in Hong Kong in 2011, and about 129,575 of the number were land-based OFWs.

“This is a fair chance for our Filipino workers, not only because they will have the opportunity to earn, but most importantly, the experience and the learnings they will acquire from working in Hong Kong will contribute to their knowledge and skills which they can use upon their return to the Philippines,” Baldoz said.

Baldoz also said that Hong Kong’s Construction Industry Council is offering around 2,000 slots for those who would like to take construction-related vocational studies.

She also said DOLE will watch out for developments and updates in these projects. Amid the possible developments, Baldoz reminded Filipinos to be vigilant in while job hunting and to be aware of accredited employers and possible scams.

“At the same time, I wish to remind everyone who are interested to work in Hong Kong or in any parts of the world to be extra careful especially in dealing with recruiters,” she said.

“They can check the website of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) to validate the legitimacy of a job order. They can also check, through the website, the status of the employment agency that they are dealing with,” Baldoz continued.
