Kevin Rudd has taken over as the new leader of Australia's Labor Party after winning the leadership ballot against the current Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
Mr. Rudd won by 57 votes to 45. The change comes at a crucial time when Australia is headed for general elections, which are due in September.
Ms Gillard said "I will not re-contest the federal electorate... at the forthcoming election,"
"What I am absolutely confident of is it will be easier for the next woman and the woman after that and the woman after that, and I'm proud of that," she added.
The leadership vote win has made Mr Rudd the leader of the Labor Party, but not the Prime Minister.
Mr Rudd was of the opinion that “Julia, as prime minister and prior to that as deputy prime minister, has achieved much under the difficult circumstances of a minority government,"
Opposition leader Tony Abbott has called on Mr Rudd to select an election date and has proposed it should be sooner than 14 September. 14th September was chosen as the election date by Ms Gillard earlier.
