The Government of Australia has the aim of improving its immigration policies for matching the needs of specific locations in the country. It has commenced a work visa which enables people having skills in farm and hospitality sectors to migrate to Australia.
This visa is a part of the regional migration agreement. It is also known as Designated Area Migration Agreements for Northern Territory and south-west Victoria. The eligibility requirements of this visa are low for income skills and language. The beneficiaries need to stay in the regions for three years before they apply for a Australia PR.
A significant development
This is also a significant development because the Australian Government has brought down the number of immigration jobs, by making a few changes, in the occupation lists; it gives in the Temporary Skills Shortage Visa. Presently only workers having desirable skills by the Government can obtain the work visa. Simultaneously, the designated area migration agreement has low criteria to get the work visa. The reforms in immigration law have raised the eligibility criteria for many general skilled migration and employer-sponsored visas. The workers must have competency in English language and an income of $53,900 per year to earn a qualification for Employment visa.
North Territory DAMA
Though a Northern Territory DAMA existed, it did not have the offer for PR. Its beneficiaries were baristas, bakers, and hairdressers requiring a low level of language proficiency and less income to qualify. It served tourism and hospitality sectors. The region faces the challenge of attracting immigrants, resulting in scarcity of labor. The employers also face many difficulties in attracting and retaining workers.
The fresh DAMA provides an option to the workers to become Australian PRs. In the DAMA for Northern Territory, 117 occupations are included in the occupation list. A new DAMA for Warrnambool region has an aim to employ immigrant workmen in agricultural sector and also for meat-processing, and dairying.
