Malaysian economy is on the up and up. Its export shipments of manufactured goods, including machinery, transport equipment and refined petroleum products, powered the growth last year. So who says Kuala Lumpur exports commodities and not value-added goods.
In November last, Malaysian exports shot up beating 13 leading economists' expectations. The Malaysian ministry of international trade and industry was somewhat shy of admitting the good result, and gave the figures for November last only now.
The economists say that Malaysian exports would have been higher had there been lifting of consumer electronic goods by Europe, as this country accounts for one-third of South-East Asia's exports of electronic goods. This apart, Malaysia exports computer parts also, which are said to be durable.
Besides, palm oil produced in the country is becoming a hot commodity like crude oil. So Malaysia is living up to the economist's expectations of a developed economy.
