Peter Carter , the RCN general Secretary has said that , the immigration rules would cause chaos for the NHS as well as other care services.
According to the rule, the Non-European migrant workers after six years, if they are not earning a minimum amount of £35,000 they would be asked to leave the UK.
He also said that, at a time when the demand is rising, the UK is making it harder to employ the staff from Overseas. While speaking for BBC Radio 4’s today program, he was of the view, that the move was totally illogical because the nation at the moment is facing a major shortage of nurses which would lead Most of the NHS trusts to spend nearing to tens of millions inorder to recruit nurses from overseas.
He added that, the long term solutions were to train more nurses in the UK, but in the interim, it has been found that foreign nurses have filled the gap.
The figures for the future years are even more worrying as per the RCN, particularly if the overseas recruitment continues to rise as a result of shortage of the home grown nurses and crackdown on the agency nurse spending.
At the moment the nurses are not on the exempt list, but the spokesman said, it was possible that they could be added to the list, as the nation would be left with no choice but to be reliant on the overseas nurses for several years. And while this could be the case, the nurse may be put on the shortage occupation list and they may be very well exempt from these rules.
The Migration Advisory Committee is the organization which does advice as to which occupation to put on the so called the shortage occupation list, they usually put those which they fear they might develop skills shortages.
