Under the new law, foreign- born spouses of Danes would have to wait an additional four years before they can move to Denmark. The minimum age for foreign born spouses to qualify for residence would rise to 28 years. This new legislation has been proposed by the Danish People’s Party (DF), reports Berlingske Tindende newspaper.
DF stated that given the success of the ’24-year rule’ in preventing forced marriages, it was proposing to rise the minimum age for foreign born spouses to 28 to issue a residence permit.
DF parliamentary group leader Kristian Thulesen Dahl said. ‘For that reason, it is natural to replace it [the 24-year-rule] with a 28-year-rule.’
The rule, which has been part of immigration legislation since May 2002, stipulates that citizens must have lived in Denmark for 24 years before being allowed to bring a foreign-born spouse here.
