The Canadian Minister of International Trade, Ed Fast, met with India’s Minister of External Affairs, Salman Khurshid and both the ministers held a productive exchange of views on core common areas of interest for India and Canada, including energy security, food security, infrastructure, investment and innovation and trade.
Ministers Khurshid and Fast recognized that, long-standing and vibrant ties among people is one of the greatest strengths of the India-Canada relationship and the reason for more than one million Canadians being of Indian origin.
India and Canada are negotiating a CEPA (Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement) essentially to create jobs, prosperity and growth in both countries. A CEPA can be a building block to expanding the long-established commercial relationship between both countries, agreed both Ministers.
The work of Canada-India CEO (Chief Executive Officer) Forum also received the support of the Ministers. To support the private sector in fomenting increased trade and investment between India and Canada, the CEO Forum was launched last year. It comprises of top Indian and Canadian business representatives.
For Canada, India continues to be a priority and it has identified primary economic opportunities in India in the agriculture, energy, education and infrastructure sectors.
The bilateral merchandise trade between India and Canada exceeded $5.2 billion in 2012 and as of July 2013, bilateral trade has increased almost 21.2% over the same period in 2012.
