Montreal Board Of Trade Demands For Increase In Number Of Immigrants

The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal has decided to negotiate with National Assembly committee, for an increase in number of immigrants coming to Quebec from 50,000 per annum to 60,000 annually by 2020.

Contradictory to the above, the Immigration Minister, Kathleen Weil’s has vouched for a slower approach. She said that Quebec should accept 2,500 more immigrants annually by 2019 as this will give time to the government to implement immigration reform (law 77).

The government introduced Law 77 earlier this year with a target to streamline the immigration procedures and welcome the immigrants based on Quebec’s labor market requirements.

In an interview to a gazette, the Board of Trade President Michel Leblanc agreed with the change but, said that he has a different opinion regarding the number immigrants visiting the country. He said that Quebec cannot afford to have low immigration numbers as Montreal is facing a problem of increase in aging population.

Leblanc said, “When we ask businesses ‘What are the criteria or factors that would induce investment’, the first that comes to mind is always availability of talent in the future.” He further added that “If you’re to create 500 jobs in the IT sector over five years, you want to make sure that in five years’ time you can get those 500 individuals.”

The Quebec’s population is stagnant compared to Ontario and British Columbia as Quebec accepts very less number of immigrants.

Out of total immigration to Canada, Quebec receives 16 percent of immigrants and constitutes 23 per cent to the Canada’s Population. The Board demands for a balance on both the sides.
